5 Ways To Have Fun With Your Cat

August 8 is International Cat Day and we have put together our top five ways to have fun with a cat or kitten in your life. Even though cat parents have fun with their felines daily, we just want to toss out a few fun ideas to consider!

5 ways to have fun with your cats

At Magoo's Pet, we love all pets, but today let's focus on felines -- kittens and cats -- and how to have fun with them. Playing with your cat has benefits that include: keeping them mentally and physically active and engaged, tiring them out so they aren't destructive if left home alone and it's a great way to build the bond you have with your cat. 

New toys. Cats get bored with the same toys just as dogs do. Can you imagine only having one or two things to do as a hobby or a way to pass the time? Wouldn't you get sick of it after a while and want to have a change? Our cats feel the same. You can either go buy some new toys or pack up some of the toys you already have and put them away. In a week or so bring them back out and take away the ones they were playing with. That will keep everything fresh and new for your cat. You can also buy a few new toys to introduce for playtime. Cats love feather toys, objects they can "hunt" and pounce on and catnip-filled items. Look for toys that let you get engaged in play with them. 

A new bed. Your cat may not sleep in a bed the way your dog does, but they do love a comfy place in which to lie their heads. Find a soft bed and put it in a sunny, solitary space. If your cat loves sleeping in a closet, put a bed there. They will thank you for the comfort. 

Take them outdoors. If you are patient you can get your cat accustomed to wearing a harness and leash and take them out of doors. Cats love to feel the grass beneath their bellies and roll in it. They also love to explore and pounce on bugs they find. If there is a sunny spot on the porch, they will likely claim it and spend time there. If you have the space, time and funds, build them a catio where they can go indoors or out in the safety of an enclosed space. 

Give them a box or a paper bag. If you haven't ever seen how much fun a cat can have with an opened paper bag or an empty box you are in for an entertaining time. The next Magoos Pet delivery you receive -- don't break down the box, put it on the floor and watch your cats explore. If you want to make it even more fun, sprinkle in some catnip or rolled-up piece of paper. They will amuse themselves for quite some time. 

Teach your cat a trick. Yes, cats can be trained to do tricks. You can train a cat to roll over, give you a high-five, fetch and other fun games. Cats are smart and enjoy interacting with their humans. If you're going to teach your cat to do tricks, be patient and reward good behavior with a treat your cat doesn't usually get. An unexpected and high-quality treat will be a motivator for the kitty. If you want to teach your kitty to stop scratching your furniture you can train him to scratch on his scratching post by removing him from the couch when he's scratching it and move him to a space he is supposed to scratch, like his scratching post. Sprinkle catnip on the post and praise your kitty when he scratches there.
