Thanksgiving Dog Safety Tips

Thanksgiving is a time for friends, family and perhaps even traveling far and wide to visit family. It is also a time for pet parents to think about Thanksgiving safety for fur babies.
There is nothing better than family -- and turkey, pumpkin pie, green bean casserole and other yummy treats -- but those treats could make your pup ill! We have put together a list of ways to keep your beloved dog safe on the trip to visit friends and family and during dinner and the other festivities.
- If you're taking a road trip with your dog, make sure you pack your dog's latest veterinarian visit records. If you have to visit a vet that isn't yours you want to make sure they know your pet is up to date on all vaccinations and about any medical conditions your pet has.
- Travel safely. Put your dog in a seat harness or in a carrier that is road-trip-worthy and safe. Never let your dog roam the vehicle untethered. If you have to step on the brakes or if you get into an accident you don't want your dog to escape and get lost. Make sure your dog (any pet in the car with you) is wearing a collar with your contact information on it.
- Bring your dog's favorite food. On a trip and being in an unfamiliar location is no time to change up your dog's diet.
- Bring your pup's favorite toys and even her bed. Make being in an unfamiliar location as much like home as possible.
- Don't forget to pack for the weather. If you're going from warm weather to cold weather, bring sweaters or boots for your pup.
- Don't feed your dog from the table. Yes, turkey dinner is delicious as are all the other side dishes that go with it, but they are not healthy for your dog. You might want to sneak in a few bites of sweet potato (as long as it's not sugar or marshmallow laden) is a healthy treat, but turkey is too rich, many times stuffing has onions (which are unhealthy and perhaps deadly for dogs) and foods your dog isn't accustomed to eating could lead to tummy upset and you don't want to be worrying about that, right.
- Speaking of tummy issues... make sure you bring along waste disposal bags. Be a responsible pet parent on the trip and while you're at your destination.
Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving from our family to yours!
