3 Ways To Celebrate Pet Wellness Month

  10/16/2020 at 14:50 pm

October is Pet Wellness Month! As responsible pet parents we know it's important to keep our pets well and healthy year-round but we do love a time to pay a bit more attention to our dogs, right?!

Pet Wellness Month might be a time to schedule your dog's anual veterinarian appointment or wash her bedding or even take longer walks.

We have three (but there are many more!) ways in which you can ensure your pet is well in October and the rest of the year, too.

Pet Wellness Month ideas

Take a walk! We know that many of us humans and our dogs have taken a LOT more walks in recent weeks because of the coronavirus pandemic and the work-from-home lifestyle. No matter how many walks you've taken, a regular walking routine is ideal for you and your dog. When you're out walking, you aren't distracted by the computer (put that phone away!) the television or other people or pets in the household. You and your dog(s) can bond and simply enjoy nature. A walk is a great way to get in shape physically as well as mentally. Time spent in nature has been proven to lower blood pressure and help clear your head.

Snuggle time. Yes, our dogs love closeness and snuggles as much as humans crave it. It's been said that loneliness and anxiety are increasing during this time of social distancing and our pets can help alleviate that. At the end of the workday, curl up on the couch or floor with your pup and just pet her, rub her ears and let her rest her head on you. Start your day with a quiet meditation with your pup. Sit quietly together. Listen to your breath and feel the breathing of your dog. Calm yourself before the craziness of the day begins. Give your dog  treat for snuggle time; it could be a healthy snack or a new toy -- your choice -- she will be happy with whatever you give her!

Feed your dog well. It's tempting to feed your dog table scraps, but you probably shouldn't. A different approach is to feed your dog healthy treats -- if you're feeding him table scraps -- like pieces of apple, pumpkin, carrot, green beans or other treats that are healthy. Don't feed her sweets or food with bones or carb-filled human foods like mashed potatoes or bread. Your dog is best-served to eat his or her ration of her kibble and wet food or raw food diet with the occasional treat of a slice of sweet potato or even snap peas! Ask your vet if you're not certain what fruits and vegetables are healthy for your dog.
