How To Celebrate National Pet Month
05/04/2020 at 19:07 pm
We love that May is National Pet Month and we have put together a list of ways in which to celebrate your pets! As pet parents we know that our pets are celebrated members of our lives each and every day, but we aren’t opposed to setting aside an entire month to share our love of them!
During National Pet Month:
- Foster a dog, cat, bird, rabbit or ferret? Check with your local pet shelter or rescue group and bring a pet home for a weekend, week or even a lifetime!
- That leads us to, adopting a pet during National Pet Month.
- Donate your time or money to a local shelter. Shelters have wish lists of items they desperately need to care for the pets in their care. Ask what’s on the wish list and drop off a few items. Donate cash – that is always in short supply. Volunteer to help with social media or to take adorable photos of the pets to show them in their best and more playful light.
If you already share your life with a pet, and if you’re reading this article, you probably do here are ways to celebrate your pet in May.
- Buy him a new toy
- Buy her a sweater
- Invest in a new harness, collar or leash
- Treat him to treats!
- Give them a new cage to sleep and play in
- Birds love mirrors, give yours a new one
- Don’t forget new perches, sandpaper and cuttlebones
- Reptiles love to climb onto logs or into caves
- Upgrade the items in your fish tank – a new pirate trunk, for example!
- Keep your pet healthy with dental chews
- Wild birds may not be pets, but they certainly entertain your cats and that’s a win for them. Buy new bird feeders, seed and suet
- Cat toys, catnip and cat trees keep your cat entertained and svelte
- Hamsters and guinea pigs love a new bungalo
We’ve shared ways to keep your dog entertained during the quarantine and we now have more ways to celebrate May and your pet. Consider this:
- Train your dog. A well-trained dog is one who is a better family member. Teach your pup to sit, stay, lie down. Use treats to reward him for a job well done.
- You can train your cats, too. Cats love to learn – some more than others. If you want to train a cat, use positive reinforcement and treats. Train your can to do anything from scratch on a scratching post to playing fetch.
- Talk with your bird – maybe he will talk back.
- Playtime is the best time for you and your pet. It’s a way to relax and unwind and bond. Playtime also keeps your pets healthy and trim.
- Take your pet to the veterinarian. Sure, this may not be a treat they’ll thank you for, but if your pet gets a clean bill of health you are truly celebrating her and keeping her healthy for a lifetime.
- Check for ticks on your pets every time you come in from a walk. You don’t need to be in the woods to encounter a tick.
- Microchip your pet for safety. Cats and dogs who escape are more likely to be returned if they are microchipped. If you get them chipped, don’t forget to update the chip information with your contact information.
- Don’t leave your pets outdoors or in a car. Our pets want to be with us – don’t make them spend the day tied up outdoors. Don’t ever leave them in a car – especially as the days start heating up.
Let us know how you will celebrate your pets this month!
