What You Need To Know About Bearded Dragons

 "I just got a dragon!" Can you imagine wow-ing your friends with that statement? What you're talking about is a bearded dragon and they are certainly a fun reptile to bring into your home. They are interesting, intriguing and enjoy interacting with humans. 

If you've been thinking about bringing a reptile into your home, a bearded dragon is an ideal choice in exotic pets. They do have a personality and will learn who you are and will eventually come running to the side of her cage to greet you! They are fun to watch and many of them seem engaged with their humans and surroundings. Some reptile owners do handle their bearded dragons and if you want to do that you need to start slowly and get him accustomed to your touch. If you take him out, make sure you do it in a space that if he runs away (they are fast) that you can find him and return him to the safety of his habitat. 

What you need to know about bearded dragons

These are great "starter" reptiles because they are friendly and love interacting with their humans. 

• They don't require a mate in the tank. Bearded dragons are happier when they are the only dragon in a tank (even though you may see more than one in a tank at a pet store, don't feel you need to buy more than one) 
• Dragons eat crickets and produce (lettuce blends, dandelions) Wash any produce before you feed it. If you get a baby dragon it will need crickets at least daily so make sure you are close to a cricket supplier. 
• Bearded dragons don't mind being handled as long as you get them accustomed to you as soon as possible. 
• You may notice your dragon following you or looking at you or even "waving" and yes, they are doing that! They are interacting with you. 
• Dragons need a warm place upon which to lie -- a heated rock for example. They also need a heat lamp -- one with a day light lamp and one red for nighttime is ideal. 
• Dragons like to climb so make sure their tank has a log they can climb up on. 
• Because they are from the desert (Australia) they don't require humid conditions. In fact, place a shallow bowl of water in the tank and they can climb in and take a bath when they need moisture
