4th Of July Pet Safety Tips

  06/28/2021 at 15:22 pm

Pet parents know that the 4th of July might be a fun holiday and a time of family get-togethers and celebrations, but for our furry family members, it can be a day fraught with fear and tension. Also, a startling fact is that July 5 is one of the busiest days at shelters and rescues because dogs and cats who got scared and ran off into the night are surrendered there. Don't let your pet become a statistic this year.

What can you do to enjoy the Independence day activities with your friends and family all while keeping your pet safe? We have put together a list of ways to do just that and not let your beloved cat or dog become a 5th of July statistic.

1. Make sure your dog (and cat) are wearing collars with your contact information on them. If your cat is both an indoor and an outdoor cat, make sure the collar is a safety breakaway style.

2. If your dog and cat are microchipped, ensure the contact information is up-to-date in case you need to be contacted.

3. Keep your pets indoors. Even if you let your cat roam free (a practice we don't embrace) on July 4 keep them indoors. The sights and sounds of the fireworks could cause them to bolt into the road or just run a further distance than they may typically roam at night. For your dogs, walk them and have them do their business before the fireworks start.

4. If you're having guests over, make sure they know that your pets are not allowed outside and make sure they check each time they go into and out of the house. You may want to put your dog into her crate and keep her safe that way.

5. Don't let your guests feed your pets table scraps. Tell your guests that your pets are on a specific food routine and that table scraps could make them ill.

6. If your pets are afraid of the sights and sounds of fireworks, and many are, don't let them come with you to fireworks displays. They may pull out of your hands and run away and some dogs may even bite family members or strangers because they are afraid.

7. Ask your veterinarian if your pet would benefit from a CBD treat like those that Honest Paws manufacturers. CBD treats may help keep your pet calmer during the fireworks display and help alleviate his stress.

8. If your dog is truly afraid and if he also suffers from separation anxiety, you will either want to stay home with him or you will want to hire a pet sitter or ask a friend to sit with your pup and kitty. Close the windows and curtains and turn on some background or white noise to keep your pet calmer.

Fireworks displays may elicit a lot of oohhhs and aaaahhhs from humans, but they cause our beloved pets a significant amount of fear and anxiety.
