3 Reasons To Adopt A Rabbit

  05/24/2021 at 11:54 am

Rabbits are cuddly, cute, trainable and a great first pet for your child.  Rabbits, like any other pet and depending on the age of your child will require adult supervision and also require a fair amount of responsibility that both the parent and the child need to commit to.

Has your child been asking for a pet? Has he been specifically asking for a rabbit? A bunny is a great "starter" pet for a child, but as with any pet, you need to commit to it for its lifetime. We have heard too many stories of families who buy their child a fluffy adorable chick for Easter or even a tiny fluffy bunny only to lose interest when the chick turns into a full-fledged chicken and the bunny turns into a rabbit. Talk with your child about the importance of loving her pet for a lifetime then begin looking for a bunny to add to your family. Did you know you may be able to find a bunny to adopt at your local shelter? Give them a call and ask if they know of any bunnies you could welcome into your home.

Here are three reasons we love bunnies/rabbits as a family pet

1. You can train a rabbit. Rabbits are intelligent and that means they can be trained to do things like: come to their names and use a litter box! Training your rabbit to use a litter box means it will be easy to clean up after her and will help keep you and your bunny happily co-existing for years to come.

2. Bunnies reciprocate your love and affection. As long as your rabbit is handled and petted and spoken to every day, he will come to welcome your touch and will hop over to greet you -- much like a dog would. Rabbits may be able to happily live as a single pet, but they do love their humans and affection and attention. Approach your new bunny slowly and let her get accustomed to you and your touch and she will come to look forward to it and just might even snuggle up with you!

3. Rabbits can get along happily with your other pets. As long as your cats and dogs are introduced to the rabbit as a pet and not as prey they may share a bed together! Remember, though there are some breeds of dogs who have the natural instinct to hunt so you need to make certain you're not introducing your rabbit to a dangerous situation.

A bonus tip is that you can travel with your bunny! Just as you can get your dog or cat to be happy on a car trip, so too can you do that with your rabbit. Make sure your rabbit is crate-trained so he is safe in the car and you can bring him on your family vacations with you!
