Best Birds For First Time Bird Owners
Are you living somewhere that won't let you have a dog or a cat? Can you have a bird (or a fish or a reptile)? If you can have a bird, we have put together a list of the best birds to have as a pet for the first time bird owner. Birds are social creatures and you may want to get more than one -- ask a trusted breeder for advice on that.
The birds pictured above are budgies (parakeets) and they make ideal first-time birds. Budgies are colorful and friendly. Some budgie owners have said that with enough time and patience that you can teach your budgie to speak! Even if your budgie/parakeet won't speak, he or she may still sing a song to welcome you back home or sing a happy tune when you walk into the room. These birds are hardy enough to be picked up and may enjoy riding around on your finger or shoulder. Some parakeet owners keep them in open cages and let them have the run of the house. We don't always recommend that because your budgie could get out a window or door or could even get closed in a door if everyone isn't careful. Make sure your budgie's cage has mirrors, cuttlebones, a bowl of water to wash in and his feed.
Canaries are great for first-time bird owners simply because they are beautiful songbirds. Their bright yellow color is welcoming and beautiful, too! These birds remain popular and are perfect for beginners. Don't expect your canary to welcome the opportunity to be petted and carried around -- they don't enjoy that. Canaries prefer to stay in their cages and entertain you with a song.
Finches, which is the species into which canaries fall, are great little birds for beginners. They don't like to be picked up but they are so friendly that if you talk to them when you come into the room, they will hop to your side of the cage and "beep" at you when you come in. Yes, their "song" sounds kind of like a beep. Finches come in a wide variety of colors and many of them have bright orange beaks.
Some first-time bird owners enjoy cockatiels, but they do require a bit more work and interaction than these other birds do. They are also a bit messier and will toss their sunflower seed shells around! Cockatiels can be taught to talk -- if you're patient and they may also like to ride around on your shoulder.
