How To Celebrate Your Senior Dog
If you have ever shared your life with a senior dog, you know just how amazing and loving they are, right? November is a celebration of senior dogs and we LOVE it!
When we become pet parents, it is a lifelong commitment. Puppies are adorable and fun and ready for any adventure. As your dog ages, he may not be as willing, or able, to join you for long walks on the beach or a trot through the park BUT he will light up your life with love and commitment and there is nothing better than that.
If you're living with a pet you've had since puppyhood and who is now inching toward her senior years, you will have to take shorter walks, you may need to take her to the vet more frequently, she may need different food or be on medications, but remember: Your dog looks up to you for her care until she crosses the Rainbow Bridge.
Many people who are at a shelter looking for a pup to bring home with them, may not consider a senior pet. We think you should, though. Why? There are a myriad of reasons that senior pets are amazing and we have put together a few for your consideration.
Why Senior Dogs Rock!
- When you adopt a senior you know what size she will be. Many people have adopted a dog they were told would be "small" who ended up being a seventy-five pound adult! Seniors are the size they are going to be!
- You CAN teach a senior dog new tricks. Just as humans can learn for a lifetime, so too can dogs. Your senior dog may not run agility courses or learn to catch a frisbee mid-air, but he can learn other tricks.
- Senior dogs still love to go for walks -- maybe just shorter and more frequent ones.
- Senior dogs are usually house-trained. Sure, they may have an accident here or there -- but any dog of any age can.
- You will know the temperament of the senior you're adopting.
- Senior dogs are calmer and they may be a better fit for an older adult than a boisterous puppy.
- Senior dogs love daily routines.
- Senior dogs who are adopted always seem to be so thankful and grateful.
