Fun Ways To Celebrate Halloween With Your Pets

  10/16/2020 at 14:21 pm

It's almost Halloween and we have put together some fun ways you can celebrate (safely) with your pets this season.  Who's ready to trick-or-treat?

Halloween is a time that is fun for many humans and children, but for our pets, it can be scary. The costumes and the tiny loud children in colorful costumes and the constant ringing of the doorbell can make our furry family members nervous. In fact, Halloween is one of the second busiest times of the year when shelters find lost pets. Don't let your dog or cat become a statistic this Halloween or holiday season.

Here are our favorite ways to enjoy a safe, happy Halloween with your cats and dogs!

Halloween pet safety tips

  • Keep your pet away from the door. A scared dog or cat is one who may rush out an open door. Keep your pets behind a gated enclosure or keep them in a room with a closed door so they cannot bolt out into the night.
  • Give your cat or dog a new treat or toy to keep them occupied. Our pets get bored with playing with the same toys or eating the same snacks -- just like humans do! Give them a special new treat or toy as their own Halloween treat.
  • If you take your dog trick-or-treating with you, make sure he is comfortable around crowds. Keep him leashed. If he starts to act nervous or scared, take him home. A scared dog is one who may bite someone out of fear and you don't want that to happen.
  • Dressing dogs and cats in costumes is fun IF they enjoy it. If your dog is comfortable in clothing, then by all means dress her up. Don't use Halloween as the first time you introduce her to clothes though!
  • If your dog gets frantic when the doorbell rings, have someone in the house sit with him in a separate room with the television or a sound machine on and keep him calm.
  • If your dog loves his crate, put a treat and toy in there and let her chill out there during the trick-or-treat festivities.
  • Keep your pets indoors on Halloween. Walk your dogs before the trick-or-treating starts. Keep even your outdoor cats indoors.
  • Don't let your pet get into the Halloween candy. They could get ill if they eat chocolate or ingest the candy wrappers.
  • Cats are escape artists so it's best to put them in a room away from the door and check that you have gathered all your cats before the fun starts.

What will you and your pets do this Halloween? We know that the coronavirus pandemic is changing the way we do a lot of things, but we'd love to know if you and your pets are planning anything special. Share your photos on our Magoos Pet Outlet Facebook page.
