Fun Ways To Entertain Your Dog

  04/24/2020 at 14:32 pm

Coronavirus is still keeping us at home with our dogs. While taking them for multiple walks a day is an ideal way to spend time with them, after a while they will get bored of taking a walk and so will you. Keep in mind, too that if your dog was accustomed to going out once a day when you were at work and now she is going out and going potty multiple times a day, her body will grow accustomed to that. Before you go back to work, you will want to scale back on the number of walks to get her body accustomed to not going outdoors as frequently.

We've put together this list of ways to entertain your dog(s) that we think you and your dog will enjoy!

  • Play with a new toy. Your dog will get bored with playing with the same toys every day -- just like a child would. Swap out toys and add new toys to the mix. We love to put our dog's toys in a bucket or a plastic basket and let them root around in there grabbing their favorite and discovering hew toys! Now that you've given your dog a new tug toy, spend some time playing tug-of-war. Don't tug too hard or you could hurt his teeth. If your dog has learned the "drop it" command, ask her to drop the toy so you can pick it up and throw it for her to catch. This game will give her some much needed exercise and some fun interaction with you!
  • Walk in a different location. Give your dog a chance to sniff new smells. Hop in the car and drive to a new dog-friendly location for a walk. Make sure you keep your dog on a leash for his safety. The change of location will be something you'll enjoy as much as your dog will. If you've always wanted to take long walks in the woods but never had time, use this quarantine time to live that adventure. Keep a mask with you in case you run into other people -- stay six feet away, as is being recommended. When you're in a new location, don't worry about walking at a brisk pace, give your pup a chance to sniff, taste and even roll in items that catch her attention.
  • Puzzle toys. We already mentioned toys, we know, but puzzle toys are those that keep your dog entertained without too much active participation from you. If you have a major client call or a work-related Zoom meeting, giving your dog a puzzle toy will keep her entertained and give her a snack while she is working her mind.
  • Groom your pup. This may not be something your dog will enjoy BUT it can be a way for the two of you to bond and spend quality time together. If your groomer is unavailable right now -- and many are -- you may need to give your dog's coat a good brushing and you may need to groom around his mouth (especially if his beard gets full of food!) You can ask your groomer for tips on how to brush and groom your pet or you can jump on YouTube and probably find a DIY video right there. Take your time. Talk in a soothing voice. Groom in brief bursts and stop when your dog starts to get squirmy and bored. Make grooming a time your dog will look forward to, simply because he's spending time with you.
  • Foster or adopt a new puppy! If you're looking at being a remote worker for the near future, now might be the ideal time to foster a dog or puppy or even give a dog or puppy a forever home! If you're adopting or fostering a new puppy, part of the tasks will be to housetrain him. With patience and a set routine, housetraining can be easier than you think! Prepare for "accidents" when the puppy is learning where to go potty. Also, if you're adopting an older dog who may have been in the shelter for some time, be patient because she may need to learn to go potty out of doors, rather than inside the house.

What fun things have you and your dog been doing together now that you're able to spend so much time with one another? We hope you're taking time to snuggle your pup and give him all the attention he craves when you're at work and he is home alone. Here's to fun with your dog(s)!

We've written an article on how to get your pup accustomed to the new routines that coronavirus may have brought to your lives and your lifestyle. You can read here about how to get new routines with your pup!
