Watching fish swim around in an aquarium is a peaceful, stress-reducing way to relax and unwind. Fish tanks are also beautiful and unique, especially when you consider how many species of fish re available, the number of accessories you can add, the plants, the various color rocks and tank backgrounds and you will see you can truly make your aquarium as unique as you are. If you've never owned fish you may be wondering what is involved in setting up a tank and keeping your fish healthy. We have put together a list of 5 tips for owning fish and setting up your aquarium.

Do you want a freshwater or a salt water tank? There are advantages and disadvantages to each and it mainly revolves around caring for the water. Each type of fish -- salt water or fresh water -- are unique and beautiful. The type of fish you want may make the difference in the water type you choose for your aquarium.

  1. The size of the aquarium matters. Not only will the size determine the number of species of fish you can safely house together, but it could also determine the size the fish eventually grow to. You need to decide where your tank will fit and that may be one of the factors in the size tank you invest in.
  2. The price of fish vary wildly. You can buy a goldfish for about a quarter, but there are Angelfish that sell for up to $1,000! If you're just starting out, you may want to invest in fish at the lower spectrum in the price range just to make certain you can keep them alive. Betta fish are also easy for beginners, but remember, they cannot be in a tank with any other fish.
  3. When determining how many fish you can have in your tank the rule of thumb is "1 gallon of water for every two-inch fish." A professional at a store that sells fish can help you chose fish that will thrive well together and thrive in the size tank you buy.
  4. The size and water type and fish you want will add to the cost of your aquarium set up. You could start with a small freshwater tank that could cost around $100 or you can go with a massive salt water tank and fancy fish that could start out around $1,000 or higher. The cost is definitely up the individual aquarium owner, but you might want to have your budget in mind before you have your heart set on a tank set up.

One of the things many new fish owners do is overfeed their fish. Sprinkle fish food on the top of the water and watch and see how quickly the fish come to eat it and if there is any left after a few minutes. If there is food left floating, feed them less food the next time. Be prepared to clean the water regularly, especially if you overfeed. Invest in a tank filter and cartridge that keeps the water clean and clear and a lighting set up that will keep the water at the appropriate level.

Have you ever had an aquarium? What were your challenges and what did you (or do you!) still love about your fish?
